Organic Cotton. Recycled Plastic. Waterbased Ink. Responsibility you can wear.
Our t-shirts are made of 50% organically grown Texas cotton and 50% recycled post-consumer plastics (up to 3 20 oz. plastic bottles per shirt!). While it would have been a whole lot easier for us to give you a cheap, genetically altered cotton, we wanted to make sure we were doing right by the planet. By using recycled plastics, we are helping get rid of those pesky single use bottles that are discarded only to live in landfills and oceans forever. And by using organic cotton, we are making sure your purchases are going towards promoting healthy and sustainable farming, with companies that share our passion for a healthy planet. We have dedicated ourselves to using only eco-friendly products and businesses because we want you to feel just as good about the eco-friendly process we use to develop our shirts as you do about the designs on the front of them.
So what’s the big deal about using organic cotton anyways, you ask? Well, the benefits are many. For starters, the farm that grows the cotton we use is located in Texas and they have worked mighty hard to gain their Organic certification. For them, Organic doesn’t just mean grown naturally, it means that everything they do in regards to their organic cotton is environmentally responsible. They start with soil that is more fertile than most because their process uses the science of crop rotation, which keeps the soil from becoming overused and depleted of its resources (preventing the dust bowl from coming back). What that also means is that they don’t have to rely on growth hormones, because they are actually using fertile, quality soil. So no GMOs here. The next place a lot of farms go wrong is by using (and overusing) herbicides. But at our guy’s farm, guess what they use? Nature and old fashioned hard work. They pull the weeds that pop up instead of waging chemical warfare on them, and they use natural predators to feed on the bugs and other creatures that can damage the cotton. Makes sense to us.
So what’s the big deal? Well, you’ll know once your put on your new shirt. It’s soft, it’s lightweight, and you may rest assured that your cotton was grown to minimize its eco-footprint.
From the side of the highway to the Pacific Gyre, our planet has a huge problem with the amount of post-consumer plastic that is discarded day after day. So while we at Born to Backpack are committed to reducing our own plastic waste, we also wanted to be proactive and use our shirts to help clean up what others have thrown out. Because even though incorporating recycled plastic bottles into our shirts isn’t as good as eliminating plastics in the first place, we think its a close second. So as long as there are plastic bottles being thrown out, we will continue to help keep them out of our oceans and highways and turn them into shirts you love.
But our decision to offer shirts that are made from recycled plastic doesn’t just serve the planet, it serves us too. We love using recycled plastic because of the benefits it provides as a fabric. By choosing a fabric that incorporates three 20 oz plastic bottles per shirt, we are able to incorporate the performance benefits of Polyester into our already soft shirts. On top of that, the plastic simply makes your shirt better. Polyester is the main fabric in moisture wicking shirts, and that same polyester is the end result of incorporating the recycled plastic into our shirts. So when you are thinking about which shirt to pack for your next trip, make sure its a shirt that works with you, not one that works against you on the road.
Performance and Feel
On top of all the good that is done by using an eco-friendly process, our products perform in ways other shirts can’t. The recycled bottles that are turned into your perfect shirt are great at wicking away moisture; meaning that when you are out in the world, either at home or abroad, you won’t be held back by a wet cotton shirt. You will be enjoying the breeze on your back and the design on your chest.
And as for that organic cotton? Well, it is way lighter than standard cotton, and just about as soft as you can get! What that means for you is the lightweight and moisture wicking properties of our shirts let them dry quicker that ordinary cotton shirts, and their lightweight construction makes them just a little less bulky than other shirts, because we know every nook and cranny in your pack is precious real estate.
Between our special cotton, recycled plastics, and the benefits of the two of them, we are confident that your shirt will not only perform great while its on you, but you will perform great while wearing it.
